FOR THE ANXIOUS PATIENT
Are You Afraid of Dentists?
If you’re afraid of dentists, you’re not alone. Some people who go regularly to the dentist still feel anxious about their dental visits. Fear is one of the biggest reason people avoid dentists. We recognize that your fear and discomfort are real, and will do everything we can to ease your anxiety.
Our entire staff works together to ensure our patients are as comfortable as possible. We’ll offer you your choice of music or TV shows to help put you at ease – as well as some good old fashioned TLC.
But for some people, that isn’t enough – so we also offer a variety of sedation options that will ease your fear.
What is sedation dental treatment?
Sedation dental treatment allows your doctor to provide a variety of dental treatments safely and comfortably for patients who experience anxiety when visiting the dentist. There are several benefits to sedation dental treatment, including:
- No memory of undergoing the procedure
- No sense of time while under sedation
- No sense of smell or sound
- No fear or anxiety during treatment
Patients who have undergone a procedure using sedation dental treatment will tell you it is a simple, relaxing way to experience dentistry.
Is Dental Sedation for You?
Imagine undergoing a complex dental treatment like a root canal, extraction, or oral surgery. When your treatment is complete, you have no recollection of the time it took, the pain, the noise, or the discomfort you were expecting.
Patients who benefit from sedation dental treatment have:
- A fear or anxiety of being at the dentist
- A hard time sitting still for long periods of time
- A hard time getting (and staying) numb from anesthetics
- Fear of needles or pain
- Very sensitive teeth
- Sensitivity to sensory stimulation (touch, smells, sights and sounds)
- Extensive dental treatment
- Complicated procedures
- Strong gag reflex
- TMJ issues – difficulty opening mouth
- Young child in need of treatment
How are sedatives administered?
An extremely common technique for dental sedation is oral sedation. It is easy and does not require the use of needles. You will be given a prescription pill which, taken about an hour before your appointment, will have you fully relaxed by the time you arrive at our office, so you must be accompanied by a companion. During treatment, we will cover you with a cozy warm blanket and more medication may be given depending on the procedure and the length of your appointment. Once you are totally relaxed and comfortable, we will take care of your dental needs. Then, when we have completed your dental treatment, your companion will take you home so you can rest.
